If there’s one thing all of our patients enjoy, it’s a yummy snack. Just be sure to stick with things that are safe for hedgehogs. Hedgie likes insects, so get your pet some freeze-dried mealworms, waxworms, or crickets. You can also give the little guy a bit of canned cat food; plain, cooked meat; or boiled eggs. Hedgehogs can also have small amounts of fruit, such as watermelon, pears, papaya, or berries. Remove the skins, seeds, and pits first. Ask your vet for more information on safe and unsafe treats.
Hedgie is very playful. Get your spiky pal some new playthings! Hedgehogs often like playing with balls, such as ping-pong balls. Many cat toys are also fine. Your hedgehog likely spends a lot of time in his cage, so why not make it a bit nicer? Give your adorable pet a new hide box, or perhaps a comfy pet tent or hammock. Hedgie may also appreciate an exercise wheel. Just be sure to choose a solid one, as the wire wheels can cause injuries.
Like many small animals, hedgehogs enjoy mazes. You can make one out of cardboard boxes, paper mache, or PVC pipe. Just be sure it’s large enough so that your prickly pal won’t get stuck.
